Rivastigmine
For an informed discussion with your doctor or pharmacist. This information collection is not a clinically validated interaction checker. Missing data do not establish safety. Do not change or stop prescribed medicines on the basis of this information. The findings apply to the specific conditions studied; laboratory and animal studies cannot be directly extrapolated to humans.
Active substance: Rivastigmine
Examples of brand names: Exelon [EU/DE]
ATC code: N06DA03
Main use (for orientation): Dementia
Documented research summary
Randomised six-arm crossover study, n=15: 3 mg rivastigmine attenuated cannabis-induced impairment of delayed recall; immediate recall showed only a trend. CBD/rivastigmine additionally showed stronger effects than either alone in a scopolamine mouse model; this cannot be extrapolated to patients.
Uncertainties and limitations
Documented individual title/abstract review with selected relevant full texts; not an exhaustive worldwide systematic review and no independent human professional approval. Missing data do not establish safety. All 28 cannabinoids define the search scope, not 28 clinically studied pairs per active substance.
Separately recorded findings
2 separately recorded findings. Each statement applies to its documented study context.
Cannabis; inhaled preparation – clinically investigated
Finding ID: B0469
Type of result: Context-specific finding
Observation: Rivastigmine improved delayed recall; immediate recall showed only a trend.
Mechanism: Modification of cannabis-related memory effects by vardenafil or rivastigmine.
Study type: Double-blind human crossover experiment, pharmacodynamics
Context studied: 15 people, six conditions; vardenafil 20 mg or rivastigmine 3 mg.
Clinical interpretation: Human endpoint directly studied under narrowly defined study conditions; long-term safety and generalisability not established.
Limitations and uncertainties: Small acute experiment, not a long-term treatment or safety recommendation. Ambiguous cannabis mass in the abstract not treated as a THC dose.
Original sources for this finding: Rivastigmine but not vardenafil reverses cannabis-induced impairment of verbal memory in healthy humans. [VF_P_24998257]
CBD – laboratory and animal studies
Finding ID: B0479
Type of result: Context-specific finding
Observation: CBD together with rivastigmine improved the passive avoidance test more than either treatment alone.
Mechanism: Combination in the scopolamine model of memory impairment.
Study type: Mouse experiment, pharmacodynamics
Context studied: Acute intraperitoneal CBD 1 mg/kg and rivastigmine 0.5 mg/kg; relevant full-text sections of PMC11206614 read.
Clinical interpretation: Applicability to humans is unresolved; preclinical endpoint, not clinical evidence of treatment efficacy or safety.
Limitations and uncertainties: Animal model and behavioural test, not a clinical Alzheimer's combination or human pharmacokinetics.
