Itraconazole
For an informed discussion with your doctor or pharmacist. This information collection is not a clinically validated interaction checker. Missing data do not establish safety. Do not change or stop prescribed medicines on the basis of this information. The findings apply to the specific conditions studied; laboratory and animal studies cannot be directly extrapolated to humans.
Active substance: Itraconazole
Examples of brand names: Sempera [DE]
ATC code: J02AC02
Main use (for orientation): Fungal infections
Documented research summary
An existing human study found only a small change in CBD exposure despite a strong CYP3A inhibitor. This contradicts blanket assumptions that being a CYP3A4 substrate implies a large CBD drug–drug interaction; other formulations/rare cannabinoids remain unresolved.
Uncertainties and limitations
Capsules ≠ oral solution; absorption/exposure are not interchangeable.
Shared enzymes must not be equated with clinical evidence of an interaction; CBD/THC findings cannot be extrapolated to other cannabinoids.
Separately recorded findings
1 separately recorded finding. Each statement applies to its documented study context.
CBD – clinically studied
Finding ID: B0084
Type of result: Positive finding / indication
Observation: Increase in CBD exposure <10%.
Mechanism: CYP3A4 inhibition investigated
Study type: Phase I data in a study overview
Context studied: Pharmaceutical CBD, healthy participants.
Clinical interpretation: Small in the regimen investigated
Limitations and uncertainties: Not evidence that all CYP3A inhibitors have no effect.
