Active substance: Indinavir

Examples of brand names: Crixivan [EU; historical, authorisation withdrawn on 26 March 2021]

ATC code: J05AE02

Main use (for orientation): Historically: HIV-1 in adults, combination antiretroviral therapy

Documented research summary

Randomised 14-day study: cannabis-smoking arm n=9 with a small reduction in indinavir Cmax; other pharmacokinetic differences were not significant. Limited short-term evidence; do not extrapolate to CBD or current HIV regimens.

Uncertainties and limitations

Historical CRIXIVAN capsule label, 2012. No claim of current market availability; the studied cannabis-smoking and dronabinol arms are distinguished.

Shared enzymes must not be equated with clinical evidence of an interaction; CBD/THC findings cannot be extrapolated to other cannabinoids.

Separately recorded findings

1 separately recorded finding. Each statement applies to its documented study context.

THC-containing cannabis/dronabinol, separate study arms – clinically investigated

Finding ID: B0093

Type of result: Context-specific finding; read the limitations

Observation: Small reductions in the cannabis-smoking arm, with a statistically reduced Cmax; the authors expected no short-term clinical consequence.

Mechanism: Pharmacokinetics in a clinical trial

Study type: Randomised placebo-controlled pharmacokinetic study

Context studied: 28 indinavir participants across three study arms; 14 days.

Clinical interpretation: Individual medical / pharmaceutical assessment; do not use as dosage instructions

Limitations and uncertainties: Do not extrapolate to modern HIV medicines or highly concentrated CBD.
